MacArthur Foundation reading my mind huh? They want to fund Capacity for Conservation in the Caribbean!!
Remember I told you I decided to look at capacity building for my final paper, mainly because of my frustrations with my internship but also because at the end of the day it is us ” humans/conservation workers” who are charged with the responsibility of conserving/managing natural resources. The fish, birds, trees can take care of themselves with or without us! And today i Found this grant……they are awarding funding to the Cockpit Country……ahhhmmm hello…??!!I should call someone in Jamaica …somewhere…I want in.. I ‘ll work for my stay and tuition loan payments, and food, and clothing expense and travel…and….okay ….a salary and the sheer pleasure of working near Accompong.
During the 2007 and 2010 grant cycles the Foundation will specifically target five large areas in the Greater Antilles for on-the-ground support, including: South central coast and archipelagos of Cuba, including the Zapata Swamp and Isle of Youth Eastern mountains and coastal zone and southeast archipelago of Cuba The Jaragua Peninsula of southwestern Dominican Republic and southeastern Haiti Cockpit country and watersheds of western Jamaica Coastal zone of northeastern Haiti and adjacent Dominican Republic (exploratory)
Building Conservation Capacity. Grants under this second strategy element should contribute to strengthening the technical and institutional capacity for sustained conservation in the Greater Antilles or regionwide………… with particular attention assigned to projects that integrate conservation objectives in national and regional economic plans, sustain conservation financing, maintain a stream of human resources, affect public law and policy, and build public constituencies.
